Q: Can I adopt a child from abroad?
A: We do not provide a service to inter-country adopters. You can contact your Local Authority if you wish to find out more about this.

Q: Can I adopt if I am single?
A: Yes. For some children who have experienced trauma a single parent may be the preferred option.

Q: Can I adopt if I am gay?
A: Apart from people who have committed offences against children, anyone can ask to be assessed as an adopter, regardless of marital status, disability, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

Q: Am I too old to adopt?
A: There is no age limit for a prospective adopter. Each case is decided on its own merits. We look for healthy adopters with energy and love to give.

Q: Will I be turned down if I smoke or am overweight?
A: You will need a Medical report which will be seen by the Agency’s Medical Adviser. The Agency will provide information about the risks to health in relation to weight and smoking. Local Authorities will not usually place pre-school age children with adoptive parents who smoke.

Q: Do I need to be a practising Christian in order to adopt from Families for Children?
A: No. We try very hard to place each child in the environment which best suits their cultural and religious background. We also take into consideration birth parents’ wishes regarding this.

Q: My husband and I are from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Does this matter?
A: We positively welcome this. Many of the children we help are from diverse backgrounds and we desperately need couples who can reflect a variety of cultures.

Q: What if we’re not married?
A: What is important is that adopters are able to meet the needs of children, and provide a stable, loving home environment. We will, therefore consider assessing couples who are not married.
